OCI Global Partners with Waga Energy to Produce Biomethane in Texas

Jun 5, 2024

OCI Global, a global leader in the production of nitrogen fertilisers, methanol and hydrogen, has entered into a strategic partnership with Waga Energy to produce biomethane at the Beaumont landfill site in Texas. Established in the Golden Triangle region (Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange) since 2010, OCI Global continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable local development. The biomethane project, carried out in partnership with Waga Energy and the City of Beaumont, supports this ambition while contributing to OCI Global’s green methanol production.

The project involves the installation of a gas capture system to collect emissions generated by the decomposition of organic waste. These gases will then be upgraded into biomethane by a WAGABOX® unit and injected into the local gas network.

The initiative is expected to create around 20 jobs during the construction phase, in addition to the 300 jobs already generated by OCI Global in the region. It will also provide additional revenues to the City of Beaumont once the unit becomes operational.

The WAGABOX® unit will be built and operated by Waga Energy, while OCI Global will own the biomethane production. This innovative business model in the United States could potentially be replicated at other landfill sites.

Scheduled to enter service in 2025, the project will avoid the emission of approximately 27,440 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, equivalent to the emissions generated by the consumption of 2.8 million gallons of petrol annually, according to the methodology of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A further environmental benefit will be the reduction of methane emissions, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases.

“We’re excited about this partnership with Waga Energy and the City of Beaumont, which will not only secure a sustainable source of biomethane for OCI HyFuels, but will also help the City significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are proud that our first biomethane investment is in Beaumont, where we have invested and created jobs for the past 15 years. We look forward to partnering with other local landfill operators to support their decarbonisation ambitions and create meaningful value for these communities.”

“We are delighted to partner with OCI Global, a visionary leader in low-carbon solutions and a pioneer in the use of biomethane to decarbonise feedstock industries. This project at the City of Beaumont Landfill is innovative not only because of its cutting-edge technology and use of cryogenics, but also because of the transformative business model we are introducing as a provider of landfill gas upgrading services.”
