Chester County Solid Waste Authority Chooses Waga Energy to Produce Biomethane at the LLARC Landfill (PA)

The Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA) in Pennsylvania, USA, is embracing the energy transition in partnership with Waga Energy. Following a competitive tender process, CCSWA selected Waga Energy to produce biomethane from landfill gas at a local waste disposal site.

The new WAGABOX® unit, which will be constructed and operated by Waga Energy, will upgrade captured landfill gas into grid-quality biomethane, a renewable energy source injected directly into the local gas distribution network.

This collaboration forms part of a long-term shared vision between the two organisations, with the WAGABOX® unit expected to operate for at least 20 years. CCSWA and Waga Energy will share revenues generated from the sale of the biomethane produced throughout the duration of the contract.

The unit will be capable of processing up to 3,200 Nm³/h of raw biogas and producing more than 130 GWh of biomethane per year. The project will avoid more than 27,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually compared with fossil fuels, equivalent to avoiding the emissions generated by approximately 2.8 million gallons of petrol each year, according to the methodology of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This collaborative project represents a significant step forward in promoting the circular economy while contributing to climate action. It also demonstrates the positive impact of public-private partnerships for the benefit of local communities and the environment.
