Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA), a global leader in the production of biomethane from landfill gas, has signed a commercial agreement with Decatur Hills Landfill, one of the landfill sites associated with Best Way Disposal, a family-owned waste management company based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to produce biomethane at the Greensburg landfill.
As part of this agreement, Waga Energy will fund the construction of a biomethane production facility using its patented WAGABOX® technology to upgrade landfill gas (LFG) into grid-quality biomethane. Waga Energy will operate the facility for an initial 20-year term, supporting the landfill’s commitment to optimising methane capture and maximising renewable energy production.
Once commercial operations begin in 2025, the WAGABOX® unit will produce more than 55 GWh of biomethane per year. Production will be injected directly into the local gas network through a dedicated connection that will be built as part of the project.
The Decatur Hills Landfill WAGABOX® unit will process up to 1,600 Nm³/h of landfill gas and deliver an environmental benefit by avoiding more than 13,700 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually, equivalent to avoiding the emissions associated with the consumption of 1.4 million gallons of petrol per year, based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculation methodology.
A key pillar of the energy transition, biomethane is a local and renewable source of energy capable of replacing fossil fuels in transport, industry and heating.
