Expert knowledge of LFG is key to making an injection project a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_1 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">Three types of gas in varying proportions<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>LFG is a mix of three gases in varying proportions:\u00a0<\/span><strong>biogas<\/strong><span>, generated by the decomposition of organic matter contained in the waste;\u00a0<\/span><strong>air<\/strong><span>, which infiltrates into the collection network; and various\u00a0<\/span><strong>volatile organic compounds<\/strong><span>\u00a0produced by the waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_2 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h3 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">1) The biogas produced spontaneously by the decomposition of organic matter<\/h3><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Landfilled waste contains a significant amount of organic matter<\/strong>, in the form of food waste, green waste, paper, cardboard, leather, wood, etc. It represents about 50% of overall tonnage and still 25% when waste is sorted upstream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Inside the cells, the organic matter is degraded by various micro-organisms which thrive in humid and oxygen-deprived environments. The most active micro-organisms are so-called methanogenic bacteria, which produce methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>) as a metabolic by-product in hypoxic conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This spontaneous phenomenon produces a biogas consisting primarily of methane and carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>). It also contains traces of hydrogen sulfide (H<sub>2<\/sub>S), ammonia (NH<sub>3<\/sub>), hydrogen (H<sub>2<\/sub>), organic sulfur compounds (called mercaptans) and various acid gases or aerosols.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The proportion of each of these components varies over time<\/strong>\u00a0as the organic matter passes through different degradation stages.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_0 et_pb_image et_animated et_pb_module et_block_module post-img\"><a href=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/graph1-us-1.png\" title=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\" class=\"et_pb_lightbox_image\" alt=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/graph1-us-1.png\" alt=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\" title=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\" width=\"673\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/graph1-us-1.png 673w, https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/graph1-us-1-480x291.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 673px, 100vw\" class=\"wp-image-2725\" \/><\/span><\/a>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-img-legend\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">Evolution<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">of<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">landfill<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">gas<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">composition<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">throughout<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">the<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">waste<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">degradation<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_3 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h3 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">2) The air entering the collection network<\/h3><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Methane is a highly flammable gas. It is also a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 20 times larger than that of carbon dioxide.\u00a0<strong>Landfill site operators have to collect this gas to prevent fire and explosions, but also to avoid direct emissions into the atmosphere<\/strong>. Collection is also a way of reducing odor nuisance (caused primarily by hydrogen sulfide and ammonia) and helping to regreen the site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A standard LFG collection system consists of a blower hooked up to a network of wells, installed vertically and\/or horizontally in the waste mass, which transport the gas to a flare stack or an energy recovery unit. Given that such networks are never completely airtight, they also draw in air (oxygen and nitrogen).\u00a0<strong>The volume of air present in the LFG depends on various factors<\/strong>, such as blower settings, cell wall permeability and the airtightness of conduits.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_4 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h3 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">3) Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/h3><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collection network also draws in volatile compounds produced by waste such as paint, solvents, detergents, etc. These compounds include hydrocarbons, siloxanes, aerosols, dust, particles and volatile metal compounds. The various trace compounds are grouped together under the term \u201cvolatile organic compounds\u201d (VOCs).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_1 et_pb_image et_animated et_pb_module et_block_module post-img\"><a href=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/vignette-1-1.jpg\" class=\"et_pb_lightbox_image\" alt=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/vignette-1-1.jpg\" title=\"vignette-1-1\" width=\"960\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/vignette-1-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/vignette-1-1-480x301.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 960px, 100vw\" class=\"wp-image-6566\" alt=\"Fusce vel arcu vel turpis pulvinar consectetur at ac arcu\" \/><\/span><\/a>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_1 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-img-legend\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">Landfill<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">gas<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">is<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">collected<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">through<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">a<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">network<\/span> <span class=\"___1cs5bdp f1w7gpdv f5p0z4x\">of<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">wells<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">and<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">pipes<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">before<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">being<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">treated<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">or<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">recovered<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">for<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">energy<\/span> <span class=\"___xxxjie0 f1w7gpdv f1gqqdtu\">production.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_5 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">The chemical composition of LFG<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The gas arriving at the flare stack or the energy recovery unit is\u00a0<strong>a mixture of biogas, air and VOCs<\/strong>. It consists of methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>) and nitrogen (N<sub>2<\/sub>), as well as various trace compounds.\u00a0<strong>The proportion of each gas varies from one site to another<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 it depends on the type of waste landfilled, the degradation phase and other external factors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The blower settings influence the volume of air in the LFG directly. The stronger the pull, the more air infiltrates through imperfections in the collection system. The weather conditions play an important role too: a high level of humidity combined with warm temperatures stimulates bacterial activity and biogas production. Variations in atmospheric pressure also have a direct impact on the level of oxygen present in the LFG.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_2 et_pb_image et_animated et_pb_module et_block_module post-img\"><a href=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Impact-of-oxygen.webp\" title=\"Impact of Oxygen Levels on Methane Content in Collected Landfill Gas\" class=\"et_pb_lightbox_image\" alt=\"Dual\u2011axis line chart illustrating changes in methane and oxygen content in collected landfill gas over time. Methane is an energy-rich gas \u2013 it is the main component of fossil gas, which we use for heating and transport.<\/p>\n<p>The solution commonly used to recover methane from LFG is to burn it in a turbine to generate electricity. But the energy yield is low. WAGABOX<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0technology makes it possible to separate the methane from the other constituents so that it can be injected directly into the natural gas grid as a substitute for fossil gas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_1 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_flex_module\"><h4 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/h4><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><p>The carbon molecules found in LFG, in the form of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) or methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), come from the degradation of organic matter. The molecules were originally absorbed by living organisms as they grew (via photosynthesis), and find their way back into the atmosphere during degradation.\u00a0<strong>Therefore, this organic carbon does not actually increase the quantity of carbon present in the atmosphere<\/strong>\u00a0(short carbon cycle), whereas the carbon emitted by burning fossil fuels does.<\/p>\n<p>As for non-biodegradable carbon contained in synthetic organic materials such as plastics, it remains trapped in the ground. A landfill site therefore acts as a \u201ccarbon sink\u201d, or in other words, a reservoir that contributes to reducing the quantity of carbon in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_2 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_flex_module\"><h4 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Oxygen and nitrogen (O2 and N2)<\/h4><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><p>LFG includes 10 to 30% air. A high concentration of air makes methane separation much more difficult: filter technologies are ineffective as methane, oxygen and nitrogen molecules are roughly the same size, and methane and oxygen can be explosive when mixed in certain proportions.<\/p>\n<p>WAGABOX<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0technology uses cryogenics to separate the methane from the air gases.\u00a0<strong>This breakthrough technology guarantees a high quality biomethane that can be injected directly into natural gas grids, regardless of the levels of oxygen and nitrogen in the LFG<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_3 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_flex_module\"><h4 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Hydrogen sulfide (H2S)<\/h4><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><p>Hydrogen sulfide (H<sub>2<\/sub>S) is a highly toxic and corrosive gas, with the characteristic foul odor of \u201crotten eggs\u201d. It attacks steel and copper, and has to be removed before starting the energy recovery process, to prevent equipment from being damaged.<\/p>\n<p>The concentration of hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds (mercaptans) in LFG tends to be higher in landfills that receive industrial waste with a high sulfur content, such as drywall used in construction. At some sites, concentration levels can reach 10,000\u00a0ppm at times (Waga Energy measurements).<\/p>\n<p>Sulfur compounds are a risk factor for personnel, a source of odor nuisance for local residents, and an extra cost that needs to be budgeted when setting up an energy recovery project.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_2 et_pb_row et_flex_row et_animated post-text-row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_2 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_24_24 et_flex_column_24_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_6 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">A production rate which fluctuates over time<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>LFG production takes place over several decades<\/strong><span>. It regularly increases when the site is in operation, and peaks a few months after the last load of waste has been landfilled. There are two possible approaches:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Operating the network in \u201cdepollution\u201d mode<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The blower draws in the LFG at a high rate and maintains the vacuum in the landfill at a high level. It helps to reduce odor nuisance but can increase the concentration of air up to 30%.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Operating the network in \u201crecovery\u201d mode<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The blower keeps the vacuum at a constant, low level. If the valves are precisely controlled and the LFG collection network is sufficiently airtight, the air content can be kept to below 15%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A landfill site operator often has to combine the different settings according to the production level of the different cells and the various, sometimes conflicting, constraints: methane recovery, odor nuisance reduction, polluting emission reduction, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_4 et_pb_image et_animated et_pb_module et_block_module post-img\"><a href=\"https:\/\/waga-staging.rambert-web.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/biogas-composition-.webp\" title=\"Comparison of Biogas Composition at Landfill Sites in Europe and North America\" class=\"et_pb_lightbox_image\" alt=\"Line chart showing the evolution of biogas production over time at landfill sites.
